NEWPORT, R.I. — In today’s quarter-finals at the Campbell’s Hall of Fame Tennis Championships, fourth-seeded Belgian Olivier Rochus reached the semi-finals for a second straight year at this tournament with a 6-1, 6-3 win over first-time ATP World Tour quarter-finalist Raven Klaasen. Also on court today, Brian Dabul advanced to his first career ATP World Tour semi-final defeating Dustin Brown 6-4, 6-4. Prior to Newport, Dabul had played just one ATP World Tour tournament this season, which was in March at Indian Wells, where he qualified and reached the third round. In doubles, No. 4 seeds Santiago Gonzalez and Travis Rettenmaier rallied past Frenchmen Nicolas Mahut and Edouard Roger-Vasselin 3-6, 7-6(1), 10-4. Also, the new pairing of Jonathan Erlich and Scott Lipsky advanced to the semi-finals with a 7-6(3), 6-3 win over Jonathan Marray and Jamie Murray. In today’s final doubles match, Australians Carsten Ball and Chris Guccione defeated Tomasz Bednarek and Dustin Brown, 6-3, 6-4.
Quarter-final action continues on Friday, when No. 5 seed Mardy Fish, who is appearing in his fourth quarter-final at the Campbell’s Hall of Fame Tennis Championships, takes on Canadian Frank Dancevic, a semi-finalist at Newport three years ago. Fish has a 20-11 match record this season. His best result was a runner-up at the Queen’s Club in London last month (l. to Querrey). Dancevic, who is ranked No. 336, is coming back from a back injury and this is his second ATP World Tour tournament of the year.
In the second quarter-final, first-time ATP World Tour quarter-finalists Ryan Harrison and British qualifier Richard Bloomfield will face-off for the second time in their careers. At a Futures tournament in 2009, Harrison rallied from a 2-5 third set deficit to defeat Bloomfield 7-5. Harrison, at 18 years, 2 months, is the youngest player in tournament history (since 1977) to reach the quarter-finals. Bloomfield, who qualified into the main draw, had a career mark of 1-10 in tour level play before winning the first two rounds in straight sets. His previous lone win came at Wimbledon in 2006.
