Williams dominates the 2008 World Racquetball Championships

CHICAGO — The 14th International Racquetball Federation (IRF) 2008 World Championships concluded as nearly 200 players representing 30 countries competed for coveted gold medals in singles and doubles as well as points for team/country awards. The event was held August 1-10, 2008 at the Kingscourt Racquetball & Handball Club, in Kingscourt, Ireland.

Irish Minister Brendan Smith along with other dignitaries officially opened the World Championships on behalf of the Republic of Ireland and finished the event with an awards ceremony for all the final presentations. Overall, 25 countries were registered. Players competed in the first half of the tournament for the individual World Championship title for Men’s Singles, Women’s Singles, Men’s Doubles, and Women’s Doubles. The second half of the tournament was a team competition. Each country had a position 1 and 2 singles and 1 doubles team. To advance, the country would have to win 2 out of the 3 matches.

After an intense match again Mexico, the men’s doubles title was captured by Jason Thoerner and Wilson’s top athlete Mitch Williams playing with his [K] Sonix. The World Championship Team Competition was also a success by Team USA as the USA men’s team defeated Mexico 2-1 for the title.
