February 5, 2009
Chicago – Serena Williams outlasted Dinara Safina 6-0, 6-3 to win her fourth Australian Open Championship and tenth Grand Slam title. By capturing the Australian Open title, she returns to the #1 ranking in the world.
Williams came out with her [K] Blade Team and 12 winners in the first set alone. The third-seeded Williams won 95 percent of the points when she landed her first serve (20-for-21). Williams finished with 23 winners and just 7 unforced errors, winning more than twice as many points as Safina. Having won the 2008 US Open, just a few months ago, Serena now continues the battle to hold the #1 spot in the world.
Serena and Venus Williams (also playing the [K] Blade Team) won their eighth Grand Slam women’s doubles title, beating Daniela Hantuchova and Ai Sugiyama 6-3, 6-3. The Williams sisters now have three Australian Open doubles titles, having previously won here in 2001 and 2003.
In Mens’ Singles, Roger Federer was the runner up in another drama filled championship match against Rafael Nadal who needed 4 hours, 23 minutes Sunday to win 7-5, 3-6, 7-6 (3), 3-6, 6-2. With his [K] Six.One Tour, Federer pushed Nadal into an intense five set contest. It was the first Australian Open men’s final to go to five sets since Mats Wilander beat Pat Cash in 1988.
Wilson’s [K] Factor had many other notable achievements at the 2009 Australian Open including: Jo-Wilfried Tsonga with his [K] Blade Tour and Juan Martin del Potro with his [K] Blade Team reaching the quarterfinals. Both Jelena Dokic with her [K] Tour and Carla Suarez Navarro with [K] Six.One Team also reached the women’s quarterfinals.
