Kennelbach, Austria – April 2009 – HEAD pro Andy Murray captured his third ATP title of the season winning against fellow HEAD player Novak Djokovic at the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami. In the women’s competition, Victoria Azarenka bested top-ranked Serena Williams in straight sets.
HEAD player Andy Murray captured his third ATP title of the season with a 6-2, 7-5 win over fellow HEAD player Novak Djokovic to become the first British champion at the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami.
Murray, who plays with a MicroGel Radical MP, put together yet another strong performance at the tournament to improve his 2009 record to a career-best 26-2. On his way to the final, he won against Juan Martin del Potro, who defeated Rafael Nadal in the previous round. Djokovic bested World No. 2 Roger Federer 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 to reach the finals.
“I think any time you win a tournament, obviously it gives you confidence,” said Murray. “The Masters 1000s have always been after the slams, they’re tough tournaments to win. Like all of your wins, it contributes to your confidence going into the slams.”
HEAD was equally successful in the women’s completion with 19-year-old Victoria Azarenka pulling the upset over top-ranked Serena Williams in straight sets 6-3, 6-1. In the semifinals, Azarenka defeated fellow HEAD player Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-3, 2-6, 7-5. The Belarusian, who plays with a MicroGel Extreme Pro with Teflon® polymer, cracked the Top 10 two weeks ago and climbed to No. 8 in the Sony Ericsson WTA ranking with this result.
