15 Grand Slam Titles: Federer Makes Tennis History

July 8, 2009

[CHICAGO] — Roger Federer outlasted Andy Roddick on Sunday to win his sixth Wimbledon Championship and record breaking fifteenth Grand Slam title. By capturing the Wimbledon title, he returns to the #1 ranking in the world.

Just a few weeks ago, Federer captured his first French Open title and his 14th Grand Slam title to tie Pete Sampras’s record. Now with his history making 15th Slam, Federer is surely viewed as the best of all time – by any standard. Federer surpassed Sampras’s 14 Grand Slam title record over a 7 year period, while it took Sampras 12 years to accomplish his 14 slam titles. This title also puts Federer back in the #1 spot, a title in itself which he held for 237 straight weeks between February 2004 and August 2008— an all-time record in tennis. The next-longest streak for men or women is Steffi Graf with 186 consecutive weeks.

In another amazing accomplishment, playing in his record 20th Grand Slam final and sixth in a row overall, Federer beat Roddick for the third time in the Wimbledon championship match, adding to his victories in 2004 and ’05. Wilson has been there with Federer every step of the way. There are statistics to track and awards to count—marks of greatness and while Federer has now gone beyond anyone before him, to his many fans and all of us at Wilson, greatness isn’t just measured by trophies and titles but how Roger has played the game—with passion, drive and a level of consistent dedication that is unmatched.

Federer was simply relentless with his [K] Six.One Tour. He took the final 30 game set of the championship match 5-7, 7-6(8-6), 7-6(7-5), 6-3, 16-14 and served a career-high 50 aces.

“The farther I went in Wimbledon the better I felt. I enjoyed the unique challenge of playing Andy,” said Federer after winning his history making title. “I’m very proud of my achievements and it feels incredible to be back on the top”.
