June 23, 2010
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. — The USTA announced today that nine American boys and six American girls have been accepted into the main draw and the qualifying draw at the 2010 Wimbledon Junior Championships. The main draw will be played June 26-July 4 at The All England Lawn Tennis Club in London; qualifying will be played in Roehampton, England, June 24-25.
The following juniors have been accepted into the junior draws and will represent the United States:
Kudla, 17, is the reigning Eddie Herr singles champion and also won the ITF Grade A Casablanca Cup in December. Currently No. 5 in the ITF World Junior Rankings, Kudla recently reached the semifinals at the USTA Pro Circuit $10,000 Futures in Vero Beach, Fla. Stephens, 17, won the girls’ doubles title at Roland Garros earlier this month and reached the girls’ singles semifinals at Roland Garros in 2009. Stephens reached the girls’ quarterfinals at Wimbledon last year, and in April she was named to the U.S. Fed Cup team that defeated Russia in the semifinal round.
Frank, 17, reached a career-high No. 5 in the ITF World Junior Rankings in January and was a semifinalist at the 2009 Dunlop Orange Bowl, while Sarmiento, 17, reached the boys’ singles quarterfinals at the 2009 US Open and has committed to play at the University of Southern California in the fall. Goldfeld, who will turn 17 on July 4, reached the girls’ singles and doubles quarterfinals at the Australian Open in January, and reached the final at the USTA Pro Circuit $10,000 event in Brownsville, Texas, last year. Hardebeck, 15, recently joined Sam Querrey and Melanie Oudin as the only players to sweep the singles titles at the USTA International Spring Championships and the Easter Bowl in back-to-back weeks, and will be attempting to qualify for her first junior Grand Slam event.
Last year, the U.S.’s Jordan Cox reached the Wimbledon boys’ final as a qualifier. Americans also reached the boys’ and girls’ finals in 2007, when Donald Young became the first American to win the Wimbledon Junior title since Scott Humphries in 1994, while Madison Brengle became the first American girl to reach the final since Chanda Rubin won the event in 1992.
