July 9, 2010

NEWPORT, R.I. — Mardy Fish came back from a set down to defeat Canadian Frank Dancevic in the quarter-finals today, advancing to his first Newport semi-final. This marks Fish’s fourth straight semi-final and his second on grass, after finishing runner-up in the final at the AEGON Championships prior to Wimbledon. In a dynamic quarter-final match that had fans on the edge of their seats today, qualifier Richard Bloomfield defeated fellow first-time ATP World Tour quarter-finalist Ryan Harrison 5-7, 7-6(3), 7-5. World No. 552 Bloomfield had won only one tour-level match (1-10 record) prior to his run at Newport and has lost just one set en route to the semi-finals. In doubles action, Australians Carsten Ball and Chris Guccione advanced to the doubles final with a 7-5, 7-6(3) win over Jonathan Erlich and Scott Lipsky. In the final they will play the winner of Marc Gicquel and Santiago Ventura and Santiago Gonzalez and Travis Rettenmaier.

On Saturday, the semi-finals will begin at 2:00 p.m., following the International Tennis Hall of Fame Class of 2010 Induction Ceremony at 12:30 p.m. In the first semi-final match, Fish takes on Bloomfield for the first time. Bloomfield is the second qualifier in tournament history (since 1977) to advance to the semis here. In 1992, Aussie Neil Borwick (l. to Antonitsch) accomplished the feat. Fish enters with a 10-7 career mark in Newport. In the second-semi-final of the day, No. 4 seed Olivier Rochus of Belgium will make his second straight semi-final showing at the Campbell’s Hall of Fame Tennis Championships as he takes on Argentine Brian Dabul, who is debuting in his first ATP World Tour semi-final.

Doubles stars dominate the Recent Player and Master Player categories in the annual Hall of Fame Induction, with the selections of Gigi Fernandez & Natasha Zvereva, Todd Woodbridge & Mark Woodforde, and Owen Davidson. In the Contributor category, wheelchair tennis creator Brad Parks has been selected for induction, along with Derek Hardwick, who was instrumental in the creation of Open tennis.

On Sunday, July 11 at 10:00 a.m., Woodforde, Davidson, Fernandez and Zvereva will take to the courts for the Hall of Fame Classic Exhibition Match. Tickets for the Induction Ceremony, the Hall of Fame Classic and the Semi-Final and Final Rounds of the Campbell’s Hall of Fame Tennis Championships are available at the box office, on tennisfame.com or by calling 866-914-FAME (3263).
