NEWPORT, R.I. — First Round competition at the Campbell’s Hall of Fame Tennis Championships got underway today before one of the largest Monday crowds in tournament history. Tournament results included Jamaican star Dustin Brown advancing over German Bjorn Phau, as well as Go Soeda, the No. 1 player for Japan advancing over No. 8 American Taylor Dent. Wild card Ryan Harrison, an 18-year-old rising star American, upset No. 6 seed Karol Beck from Germany. In the final matches of the Qualifying Round, Sergei Bubka, Jr., son of the famed Ukranian pole vaulter, advanced to earn his first main draw spot in an ATP World Tour tournament.
Tuesday’s Order of Play promises to deliver more excitement on the courts. Play begins at 11 a.m. and the third match on Center Court will feature No. 1 seed Sam Querrey, who cracked into the top 20 in the 2010 South African Airways ATP Rankings for the first time as of yesterday, following an excellent run on the grass court circuit, which included winning the title at the AEGON Championships at Queen’s Club and advancing to the fourth round at Wimbledon. Querrey was a finalist in Newport last year. He will face countryman Jesse Levine in their first round match.
Also on Center Court tomorrow will be Newport wild card Nicolas Mahut, who recently played against John Isner in the longest match in tennis history, which lasted 11 hours and 5 minutes and included 183 games over 3 days. Mahut’s appearance in Newport will mark his first return to Newport since the epic Wimbledon match.
Defending champion and No. 8 American Rajeev Ram will play Spaniard Ivan Navarro in the final match of the day on Center Court. Ram swept the singles and doubles titles in Newport last year after unexpectedly entering the tournament as a lucky loser when Mardy Fish was pulled into action for Davis Cup. Fish. the No. 5 American, returns to Newport this week for his 8th appearance at the tournament, and will be the first match on Center Court at 11:00 a.m. tomorrow, when he plays Michael Russell.
