Barth Reappointed as Davis Cup Committee Chairman

KIAWAH ISLAND, SC — Roy Barth, longtime Director of Tennis at Kiawah island Golf Resort, has been reappointed Chairman of the United States Tennis Association (USTA) Davis Cup Committee for 2011-2012. Jonathan Vegosen, the incoming President of the USTA, made the appointment. Barth will co-chair the combined Davis/Fed Cup/Olympic Committee with Fed Cup Chairwoman, Pam Austin, and Olympic Chairwoman, Barbara Smith.
Barth has been a member of the Davis Cup Committee for ten years including as vice-chairman for four years and chairman for two years. He is also a former president of the USTA-South Carolina. Barth has been the Director of Tennis at Kiawah Island Golf Resort since the resort opened in 1976.
According to Barth, the committee’s mission is manifold. “Our job is to assist in staging of the Davis/Fed Cup matches in the United States, ensure community involvement during those matches, involve junior development in the host community during the Davis Cup/Fed Cup home matches, preserve the history of Davis/Fed competition, recommend new ways to promote the competitions in the United States, and to coordinate USTA relations and participation in the Olympic movement,” said Barth. “I look forward to working with the other committee members and the new Davis Cup captain, Jim Courier, as well as the U.S. Davis Cup team to accomplish those goals.
The Davis Cup is an annual international competition between countries with the top male players representing their country. The United States last won the Davis Cup in 2007 defeating Russia in the finals with Andy Roddick, James Blake, and Bob and Mike Bryan. The United States will play against Chile in Chile March 4-6, 2010. The site for the match in Chile has yet to be determined.
