WTT National Rec Finals Winners

INDIAN WELLS, Calif. — Recreational tennis teams from California, Florida, Hawaii, Minnesota, Missouri, New York, and Virginia captured national championship titles at the WTT Rec League National Finals, which concluded Sunday afternoon at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden in Indian Wells, Calif. A record 59 recreational tennis teams representing 17 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, competed for national championship titles in 11 divisions during the three-day tournament. The teams advanced to the national finals by qualifying from their respective division in seven WTT Rec League national qualifying tournaments held throughout the year. Corporate League teams qualified by winning their local league. The weekend kicked off with a players’ Wilson Clinic hosted by tennis legend and WTT co-founder Billie Jean King. All matches were played using the WTT format, a fun, fast-paced co-ed team format that encourages equal contributions from both genders. A team has a minimum of four players, two men and two women. The WTT format uses five or six no-ad sets: men’s and women’s doubles, men’s and women’s singles and one or two sets of mixed doubles. It was the first national title for the Fredericksburg squad, who closed out the win with a 6-4 victory in mixed doubles by Matt Haney and April Dillow. In addition to Haney and Dillow, other members of Mr. and Miss Hits are captain Sandra Morgan, Ulysses Crayton, Tracey Nankivel, and Bill Connell, all of Fredericksburg, Va. Members of Fresno Tennis Club are captain Dave Colby, Jeff Klippert, Myrsso Contreras, Tania Perez, Lucy Marquez, Erika Horwitt, and Maria Rodriguez, all of Fresno, Calif.; and Caine Christensen of Kingsburg, Calif.

3.5 DIVISION: Hana Hou of Waipahu, Hawaii, won their first WTT national title by capturing the 3.5 Division with a 5-0 round robin record. Led by captain Clyde Miyasato, Hana Hou outdueled runner-up Sportsclub Phanatics of Simpsonville, S.C., 29-21, in their only head-to-head match. The Phanatics finished with a 4-1 record. Other members of Hana Hou are Kathy Kaneshige of Mililani, Hawaii; Andre Moux of Honolulu, Hawaii; Alyson Kinoshita of Honolulu, Hawaii; Scott Higashino of Honolulu, Hawaii; Dayle Takaoka of Honolulu, Hawaii; Jennifer Young of Honolulu, Hawaii; and Shari Okazaki of Honolulu, Hawaii. 4.0 DIVISION: Team Hawaii of Honolulu, Hawaii, closed out action at the 2010 WTT Finals as the second Hawaiian team to win their first national WTT title. Team Hawaii defeated Late Addition of Glen Mills, Pa., 33-23, to win the 4.0 Division title. Team Hawaii posted a 3-0 record in round robin qualifying then defeated MotherFugers of Kansas City, Mo., 35-21 in the semifinals. Team members of Team Hawaii are Michael Young (captain), Francisco Barba, Chase Kutara, Martin Lee, Charlene Matsuno, Junko Kawabata, Junko Kadomatsu, all of Honolulu, Hawaii; and Kimberly Chikazawa of Wahiawa, Hawaii; Laurie Kishimoto of Kailua, Hawaii; and Ryan Murakami of Wahiawa, Hawaii. Leading the way for the Late Addition squad was Thomas McAvoy of Phoenixville, Pa.; Kathyjoy Hammer of Marietta, Ga.; Phil Cannavo of Berwyn, Pa.; Rebecca Smith of Malvern, Pa.; Margie Hamilton of Glen Mills, Pa.; and Wanzell Flemming of Phoenixville, Pa.

4.5 DIVISION: The Killer Beez of Hidden Hills, Calif., won their first WTT National Championship, sweeping the 4.5 Division with a 5-0 round robin record. The Killer Beez edged runnerup Team Bring It of Overland Park, Kan., 29-26, to capture the title. Team members of Killer Beez are Linda Beisswanger (captain) of Hidden Hills, Calif.; Michael Lane of Austin, Texas; Scott Crandall of West Hills, Calif.; Lisa Brougham of Calabasas, Calif.; Karen Cohen of Encino, Calif.; and Wendy Pillar of West Hills, Calif. The 4-1 record of Team Bring It was enough for a second place finish. Team members are Randy Nistler of Overland Park, Kan.; Jennifer Stenson of Kirkwood, Mo.; Kyle Laramie of Lake St. Louis, Mo.; Julie Siemers of Valley Park, Mo.; and Jim Walley (captain) of Overland Park, Kan.

SENIOR 3.5 DIVISION: Love Players 3.5 of Miami, Fla, won the Senior 3.5 Division with a 4-0 round robin record. Team captain Pete Roscia of Miami, Fla., has previously been on a Rec Championship team but it was the first title for most of his teammates. Other members of Love Players 3.5 are Siriporn Burke, Andrea Steinacker, and Willie Mays, all of Miami, Fla.; Antony Van Smith of Palmetto Bay, Fla.; Susan Culligan of Miami Beach, Fla.; and Julie Weaver, Miami Beach, Fla. Baypoint Bangers & Smash of San Diego, Calif., finished as the runner-up for the second consecutive year in the Senior 3.5 Division, posting a 3-1 round robin record. Team members are Paivi Burke of La Jolla, Calif.; Robert Burke of La Jolla, Calif.; Mike Hasan (captain) of San Diego, Calif.; Judy Rockland of San Diego, Calif.; and Mike Rodley of San Diego, Calif.

SENIOR 4.0 DIVISION: It was a day of redemption for captain Connie Bolling of Virgnia Beach, Va., and her Beach Nuts squad. After winning the Senior 4.0 title in 2007 and 2008, the Beach Nuts were thwarted in their run for a three-peat last year. The Beach Nuts are back on track after winning the 2010 title in the Senior 4.0 Division. Three teams finished with 3-2 round robin records but the Beach Nuts took the title with a higher winning percentage (56%) than Central Oahu of Mililani, Hawaii (54%) and Senior Explorers 4.0 of Marina del Rey (51%). Team members of Beach Nuts are Carolyn Ware of Norfolk, Va.; Kathy Snyders, Doug Atkins, Anna Bossman, David Sloan, Phil Meadows, Connie Bolling (captain), and Patricia McLean, all of Virginia Beach, Va. Central Oahu finished as the Senior 4.0 Division runnerup. SUPER SENIOR 3.5: Love Players 3.5 of Miami, Fla., defended their Super Senior 3.5 Division title with a 2-3 round robin record and a strong 32-11 win over Team Denlinger of Lancaster, Pa. Team members of Love Players 3.5 are Pete Roscia (captain) of Miami, Fla.; Lavenia Ferguson of Novelty, Ohio; Susan Culligan of Miami Beach, Fla.; Tony Van Smith of Miami, Fla.; and Delano Clare of Cleveland, Ohio. Team Denlinger finished second in the division. SUPER SENIOR 4.0: The Kansas City Explorers’ thrilling run to the 2010 WTT Pro League title inspired fans of all ages, including the KC Masters, a team of rec players age 60 and over, who won the Super Senior 4.0 Division. KC Masters edged Team Davis of Encino, Calif., 28-24 in the finals of the Super Senior 4.0 Division to win their first WTT National title. Led by captain Jane Maloy of Smithville, Mo., the Masters were undefeated through three days of competition at the Indian Wells Tennis Center. During Friday’s kickoff reception, the members of the KC Masters told WTT co-founder Billie Jean King how excited they were by the Explorers’ Pro League Championship and they hoped to replicate the victory on the recreational level. They did that with an Overtime win over the previously undefeated Fresno Tennis Club. CORPORATE 3.5: The battle for the Corporate 3.5 title came down to an exciting Supertiebreaker victory by Morgan Stanley Smith Barney of Miami, Fla. MSSB held on for a 28-27 (7-4) win over New York State CD Topshots of Saratoga Springs, N.Y. MSSB finished with a 5-0 record and the Topshots were 4-1. The Morgan Stanley Smith Barney team was led by Andrea Steinacker (captain) of Miami, Fla.; Jeff Blum of Miami, Fla.; Luis Tascon of Key Biscayne, Fla.; Tom Andrews of Hollywood , Fla.; Elyse Gainor of Miami Beach, Fla.; and Rommy Chang of Miami, Fla. CORPORATE 4.0: Boston Scientific Overhead Smashers of Minneapolis, Minn., won the Corporate 4.0 Division with 4-1 record and 62% winning percentage. The Smashers winning percentage was the difference in breaking a 3-way tie with Donchka Travel of Beverly Hills, Calif., and Star Cushion of St. Louis, Mo. Donchka Travel had a 4-1 record and 59% winning percentage, while Star Cushion finished third with 4-1 record and 57% winning percentage. Pinehill Asset Management got by runner-up Boston Scientific of Minneapolis, Minn., 28-26, to wrap up the division title.
