Hilton Head Island, SC — Professional Tennis Registry (PTR) presented its annual awards this week during the 2011 PTR International Tennis Symposium. The event, which includes 50-plus on court and classroom presentations for tennis teachers and coaches, a tennis trade show and tournament is being held February 18-24, 2011 at PTR Headquarters on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.

Dr. Doug Eng, of Medford, Massachusetts, was the only addition this year to PTR’s roster of Master Professionals, making him the 32nd to earn the designation.

Dr. Eng has been a PTR member for 21 years and has been involved in the tennis industry for 25 years. He is a PTR Clinician and Tester. Dr. Eng served PTR New England as Coordinator of Development and Vice President, and from 1995-2002, as President, organizing and hosting a dozen mini-symposia for the organization. PTR New England was named a Champion of Tennis by Racquet Sports Industry Magazine. Since then, Dr. Eng has been named PTR Volunteer of the Year, PTR Tester of the Year, and PTR State Member of the Year for Massachusetts twice. He was also presented PTR New England Pro of the Year twice. Eng has conducted 135 PTR workshops in 11 states and Canada.

Dr. Eng has also served the United States Tennis Association (USTA) as one of its initial Development Coaches Trainers. He is a certified USTA tournament director and official. Dr. Eng started the USTA New England Sport Science Committee in 1995, and chaired the committee until 2006. For the past three years, Eng has served on the USTA National Sport Science Committee. He has been a presenter at the USTA Tennis Teachers Conference, PTR International Symposium, and the ITA Coaches Convention.

Dr. Eng has written more than 70 tennis articles for tennisone.com, tennisplayer.net and TennisPro magazine. His work has been translated into Dutch, German, Spanish and Japanese. More recently he was interviewed for The Guardian (UKs largest newspaper) and El Pais (Spain’s largest newspaper), commenting on Nadal’s serve for the latter. Many of his articles deal with sport science, a subject in which he earned two doctorate degrees.

Dr. Eng continues to teach tennis. He has taught at public recreational facilities, private clubs, and coached college tennis for 16 years. For the past decade, Dr. Eng has directed the Tennis Academy at Harvard University. In addition, he volunteers for inner-city Boston community tennis through Franklin Park Tennis Association, and for Special Olympics. He has taught children, adult beginners, nearly 100 ranked players as a high performance coach (including one NCAA champion and several ITF players), USTA leagues, and high school tennis teams. He believes in being involved with all aspects of tennis.

In 2010, Boston Magazine named Dr. Eng the city’s Best Tennis Coach.

PTR is the largest global organization of tennis teaching professionals with more than 14,000 members in 121 countries. It has the greatest percentage of multicultural and women members of any such organization. PTR is dedicated to educating, certifying and servicing tennis teachers and coaches around the world in order to grow the game.
