Nick Matthew Retains World Open Title

November 8, 2011

Greenville, S.C. — Dunlop Squash Tour Team member Nick Matthew claimed the World Open squash title for the second consecutive year when he defeated fellow Dunlop Tour Team member Greg Gaultier 6-11, 11-9, 11-6, 11-5 in a thrilling 92 minute final on Sunday at the New Luxor Theatre in Rotterdam.

Matthew, 31, is the first player to successfully defend the PSA World Tour crown in 15 years. Following the match, the Englishman said: “Being called ‘double World Open champion’ is amazing. I can’t tell you how tough Greg is. We’ve been playing since we were 15 or 16. I have two or three years on him, but it shows how tough he is that even at 16, he was pushing and beating me sometimes when I was 18. He’s younger than me and he will get his name on this trophy, no doubt.”

Matthew plays with the Dunlop Biomimetic Evolution 130 racket, featuring the classic teardrop head shape for enhanced power whilst maintaining torsional stability through a small bridge in the throat.

Steve Hall, Director of Marketing for Dunlop Sports Group Americas, said: “We’re delighted for Nick. It’s a great achievement to win consecutive titles in any sport. Nick overcame a very strong opponent in Greg and for Dunlop to have two of its Tour Team members in the final, along with having six Dunlop players win the World Open the past nine years, just shows what a strong stable of talent we continue to have.”
