A New Year’s tennis resolution

January 16, 2012

Sewell, NJ — As tennis players and enthusiasts welcome the first major of 2012, the Australian Open, tennis expert Danny Bowens takes a look back at the 2011 Barclays ATP World Tour Finals to demonstrate how players of all levels can learn from the pros to improve skills and play great tennis in 2012. Bowens conducted an in-depth analysis using his W/E Ratio Guide, available as a free download from dannybowenstennis.com/EVALFORM.pdf.

“There are some very important statistics that are critical to the outcome of tennis matches,” states Bowens, a Professional 2A PTR (Professional Tennis Registry) coach featured recently in the winter edition of TennisPro Magazine. He continues, “The w/e (winner/unforced error) ratio, net points won, quality returns and the shot hit right after your serve form the basis of point construction, success at the net and winning matches. At the Barclays tournament, however, the most revealing statistic was the w/e ratio.”

Bowens analyzed the semi-final and final matches of the tournament. In the semi-final match, Roger Federer achieved a w/e ratio of 83 compared to opponent David Ferrer’s w/e ratio of 38; approached the net three times more than Ferrer and won 7-5, 6-3. The final match between Federer and Jo Wilfried-Tsonga did not disappoint with an exciting performance, where each player earned more than 50% of winning shots at the net. During the first set, Wilfried-Tsonga had a higher w/e ratio, won more points on second serve than his opponent and lost the set. To his credit, Federer played big points (any point after one player reaches 30) better and was more effective in holding and breaking serve. For the match, Federer achieved a w/e ratio of 115, compared to Wilfried-Tsonga’s w/e ratio of 90, and won the match 6-3, 6-7, 6-3.

“The important lesson from these semi-final and final matches is that you must get to the net every time there’s an opportunity,” states Bowens. “That’s the best position on the court to hit winners or to force your opponent to make errors.”
