Pugh receives PTR USTA Community Service Award

Hilton Head Island, SC — Professional Tennis Registry (PTR) presented its annual awards last week during the 2014 PTR International Tennis Symposium. The event, which includes 40-plus on court and classroom presentations for tennis teachers and coaches, a trade show and tournament, was held February 20-23 on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.
Nigel Pugh of San Ramone, California, received the PTR USTA Community Service Award Award. Born and raised in Newcastle, Australia, Pugh played on the junior circuit, achieving a top national ranking and a spot on the Australia Junior Davis Cup Team. He has more than 20 years experience in the tennis industry, from academy owner to director of tennis for private country clubs. Currently, Pugh is the Tennis Director for the City of Fremont, California, where he oversees 42 courts on six sites, and has 10 certified teaching professionals.
His strong belief in education led to completing certification with four internationally recognized associations, Tennis Australia, the Australian Professional Coaches Association, USPTA and PTR. Pugh has earned the Professional certification rating in all four PTR education pathways. He enjoys sharing his passion for learning as PTR Clinician and Tester and as a National Faculty member for the USTA. He has hosted multiple PTR Certification Workshops at Fremont Tennis Club, so others can learn how to teach the game. Pugh has instructed all levels of players, from 4 year old beginners, to high school teams, to acting as a travelling coach on the WTA Tour. He gives back to the tennis community as a volunteer; serves as the USTA NorCal 10 and Under Chair, on the USTA NorCal Coaches Commission, as well as Junior Team Tennis and Junior Council.
