UBS honors King

March 30, 2014

NEW YORK — UBS is pleased to bestow its inaugural Trailblazer Award to Billie Jean King, a true champion of social change and equality.

“On behalf of UBS and my colleagues across the firm, I am proud to recognize Billie Jean King as a remarkable leader”

The award, given by UBS Americas, recognizes an individual, who through their remarkable leadership, strength of character and talent, has paved the way for all women. The Trailblazer Award is intended to focus attention on the kind of leadership necessary to catalyze social change and greater equality for women around the world.

A 20-time Wimbledon champion and former No.1 tennis player in the world, Ms. King has used her profile as a platform to advocate for change. Her accomplishments are legendary.

Ms. King was a catalyst for the birth of women’s professional tennis as one of nine women who broke away from the establishment in 1970 and founded the Women’s Tennis Association in 1973. She also created the Women’s Sports Foundation, which advocates for and funds the participation of women and girls in sports and physical activity. Additionally, she co-founded World Team Tennis: a trailblazing co-ed professional tennis league. Ms. King continues to lead today as a member of the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition, a co-founder of GreenSlam, an environmental initiative for the sports industry, and as a board member of several non-profits including the Elton John AIDS Foundation and the Andy Roddick Foundation.

“Among the many things that are so impressive about Billie Jean as a leader and trailblazer is her lifelong dedication to challenging and changing things that most people would just accept,” said UBS Wealth Management Americas Client Strategy Officer Paula Polito, who presented the award at The UBS Women’s Leadership program, held at The Plaza Hotel in New York.

“On behalf of UBS and my colleagues across the firm, I am proud to recognize Billie Jean King as a remarkable leader,” UBS Group Americas CEO Bob McCann said in a statement. “Thank you for using your voice to help other women find theirs.”

UBS seeks to advance leadership opportunities for women and promote the development of senior women in the financial services industry.
