Better tennis through science

July 28, 2014

Bethany Beach, DE — Research, strategy, and real-world drills converge on the court as two celebrated tennis coaches team up for a sport science clinic on Saturday, Aug. 9, from 2:30-5 p.m. at the Sea Colony Tennis Center in Bethany Beach, Del.

Internationally-known sports psychologist, author and speaker Dr. Melissa Hunfalvay of RightEye (RightEye.com) and Sea Colony Tennis Director Thomas Johnston will teach mental strategies and visual tactics designed to improve tennis players’ games.

The sport science clinic will focus on:

“Melissa really gets what athletes experience,” Johnston said. “She has a unique combination of playing, coaching and academic experience. Melissa competed as a professional tennis player on the WTA Challenger Circuit; mentored young tennis players as a coach for both men’s and women’s college tennis; and attacked the data as a scientist in her dissertation researching the use of eye tracking technology to determine focus cues of elite tennis players.”

Combining on-court drills and classroom instruction, the sport science clinic will be team-taught by Johnston, who earned national recognition as a successful and innovative tennis coach at the University of Virginia. Under Johnston’s leadership, the UVA tennis team’s NCAA ranking improved from No. 95 to No. 15, resulting in several of his collegiate players achieving world rankings.
