Karlovic, Johnson, and Ram win at Newport

NEWPORT, R.I. — No. 2 seed Ivo Karlovic and No. 6 seed Steve Johnson advanced to the second round of the Hall of Fame Tennis Championships in today’s opening round. In the first match on Center Court today, 2012 and 2011 NCAA Champion Steve Johnson defeated Clay Thompson, 61, 62. Fueled by his huge serve and 17 aces, Karlovic overpowered Robby Ginepri, 76(2) 62. Rajeev Ram, a past champion at Newport, also advanced to the second round with a win over Australian Matt Ebden. Nicolas Mahut, who won the Newport title in singles and doubles last year, advanced to the second round in doubles with partner Sergiy Stakhovsky. The pairing overcame Ruben Bemelmens and Marius Copil in a super tiebreak, 75 46 13-11.
The tournament has lots of great action to look forward to tomorrow. Tomorrow’s order of play features defending champion Mahut versus Facundo Arguello of Argentina in the opening match on Center Court, followed by No. 1 American John Isner versus Wayne Odesnik, who qualified for the tournament. In the third match on Center, Lleyton Hewitt, who has been a finalist at the event the past two years, will face Ryan Harrison. Jack Sock, fresh off his doubles victory at Wimbledon, will play the last match of the day against fellow American Alex Kuznetsov.
