90 seconds can change everything

January 22, 2015

Kennelbach/Austria — A tennis changeover can be a pretty lonely thing – or the ultimate opportunity to raise your game. In the new TV spot starring HEAD tennis players Novak Djokovic, Maria Sharapova and Calvin Hemery, HEAD uses the 90 seconds break as the ideal moment in a game to overcome a challenging situation or frustration.

The TV spot shows Novak Djokovic, Maria Sharapova as well as Calvin Hemery returning to the bench after losing the last point, visibly frustrated with their current game. But instead of dwelling on the situation, HEAD presents the changeover as the ultimate mental and physical reset button, as the perfect opportunity for players, regardless of age and level, to use the time and focus on what needs to be done to get out of a difficult situation.

The fact that tennis is an individual sport means that every player has to rely on himself in even the most frustrating on-court situation, a truth every player can relate to. The break is one of the few opportunities where players have time to refocus and shift gears – a quality that can make all the difference.

This goes for world-class players Novak Djokovic and Maria Sharapova just as much as any other player in the world. Maria phrases it like this: “If you are in a frustrating moment when sitting on the bench you want to say so many words to yourself telling you how bad you are playing – but that is not helping. You have only 90 seconds so I rather use them looking forward and give myself a few words of motivation and confidence. There is always the opportunity to change the game around before the last point is played.”

For Novak it works like this: “In the beginning of my career in difficult situations I was trying to block the negative emotions instead of acknowledging them. Now I focus on two things during the break: one is the breathing to really center myself and the second is looking at my strengths which means what can I do and not what is my opponent doing. You have to get back to the belief that all the hard work you have done in the last weeks and months will pay off in the match.”

What unites these world class players in the end is that they really use these 90 seconds to refocus, believe in their strength and return to the court with newfound confidence.

The spot has been launched online on YouTube ( and will celebrate its global TV premiere during the second week of the 2015 Australian Open. Beside the 30 second hero TV spot there are two individual 90-second videos going into more detail on how Maria and Novak use these crucial 90 seconds to their advantage. But it does not stop with these top athletes; Tennis fans around the world get the opportunity to share how they raise their game on and off the court through and HEAD’s social channels on Instagram and Facebook.
