Cleland named PTR Tester of the Year

Hilton Head Island, SC — Professional Tennis Registry (PTR) will present its annual awards later this month during the 2015 PTR International Tennis Symposium. The event, which includes 40-plus educational presentations for tennis teachers and coaches, a trade show and tournament, will be held February 19-22 on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.
Sharon Cleland, of Midland, Michigan, has been named PTR Tester of the Year. Although she has only been a PTR member since 2011, Sharon has made quite an impact on the organization.
In 2012, she was named PTR Member of the Year for Michigan. As a PTR 10 & Under Clinician and Tester, she continues to shine with her keen understanding of why it is so important to learn to teach tennis to children properly. She led an initiative to place tennis in the physical education curricula of 72 schools, involving nearly 30,000 students.
PTR’s values ethics, especially when it comes to certification testing. Cleland personifies our PTR Code of Ethics, maintaining the highest level of integrity when conducting certification tests and ensuring fairness. She takes the time to educate each workshop participant with in depth discussions about the testing process.
As the Director of Tennis and Director of Junior Tennis at Midland Community Tennis Center, Cleland emphasizes certification and has trained 22 teaching professionals on her staff. MCTC has hosted PTR workshops and is a PTR Proud Facility, a designation that demonstrates professionalism and a commitment to providing tennis instruction that meets PTR’s high standards. She strives for excellence in her staff and herself.
Cleland was one of four coaches in the nation to be selected by the USTA to develop the QuickStart Tennis Curricula for 10 and Under. She is co-author of the USTA National QuickStart Playbook, is a USTA National QuickStart Trainer, National Schools Trainer and National Recreational Coaches Workshop Trainer. Cleland is dedicated to the game.
PTR is the largest global organization of tennis teaching professionals with more than 15,000 members in 125 countries.
