‘Try Tennis Free’ campaign seeks growth

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. — The tennis industry is rallying around a campaign throughout the month of May to get more people playing tennis. The “Try Tennis Free” promotion seeks to have tennis providers and facilities offer a free introductory session, lesson, clinic or other event to help draw consumers into the sport.

Managed by the Tennis Industry Association, Try Tennis Free has the support and partnership of the U.S. Tennis Association and the two main tennis teaching groups in the U.S.—the Professional Tennis Registry and the U.S. Professional Tennis Association.

“We’d love to see every tennis facility, teaching professional, park and rec department, and Community Tennis Association offer a free session to help bring new and returning players into tennis,” says TIA Executive Director Jolyn de Boer. “Last year, tennis facilities and pros who participated in the inaugural Try Tennis Free campaign saw an average of 30 new and returning players hitting their courts. By offering a free introductory clinic, lesson or event, not only did these facilities gain members and players, but Americans of all ages and ability levels found that tennis is a fun, easy, affordable way to get or stay in shape.”

Importantly, tennis providers can offer whatever type of program they think will best encourage new and returning players to step onto the court, de Boer adds. Free offers can include lessons, clinics, Cardio Tennis, Play Days, and more. And while the push is for the campaign to run throughout the month of May, it can easily be a year-round offering.

Tennis facilities, teaching pros and other providers can quickly sign up at to participate in Try Tennis Free and receive free customizable marketing material to download to promote the campaign locally. Once the free program is registered, consumers who visit can find these free programs through a simple search.

“The Try Tennis Free campaign can continue to make a difference in helping to spread the benefits of tennis to Americans all ages,” de Boer says.
