USTA Southern Wheelchair Championships

January 20, 2016

Hilton Head Island, SC — Professional Tennis Registry (PTR) is pleased to announce that the USTA Southern Section presented PTR $18,000 Wheelchair Championships with its Wheelchair Tennis Excellence Award.

The Wheelchair Tennis Excellence Award is given to a player, program volunteer, or tournament that demonstrates outstanding community service, on-court ability, event organization and overall promotion of wheelchair tennis. This year’s recipient is the PTR $18,000 Wheelchair Championships held on Hilton Head Island, SC. The tournament is an ITF Series II Event and a USTA Fall Southern Championship.

This year, Tournament Director, Julie Jilly, welcomed 94 players from nine countries competing in Men’s, Women’s, Quad, and Junior Divisions. Due to its large Junior Draw, the tournament is also designated as an ITF Grade A Junior Event (only two tournaments are designated this level in all of North America.)

Although an international event, the tournament is proud to maintain its grassroots emphasis and community awareness goals as it includes a Run/Roll event for local league and high school players to be partnered with a wheelchair player. It also features popular Run/Roll exhibition matches at several local tennis clubs where the world’s top wheelchair players partner with the island’s top tennis professionals.

Also included is a Drill Session with PTR Pros, a Players Banquet, an ocean front beach party, and prize money to all division champions, and most finalists and semi-finalists. The tournament concludes with a workshop on Instructing Wheelchair Tennis so tennis pros, coaches and rehab hospital staff can learn how to bring the sport to new players.

Accepting on behalf Jilly was Dan Santorum, CEO of Professional Tennis Registry.
