The United States has never lost to Switzerland in Fed Cup play (8-0), with the countries’ most recent competition in 1993. If the Americans do not advance past Switzerland this weekend, they will be disqualified from competing in the 2020 Fed Cup tournament. The United States leads all nations with 18 Fed Cup titles.

The U.S. Fed Cup team is captained by retired American tennis star Kathy Rinaldi who, in her 2017 debut, lead the Americans to their first Fed Cup title in 17 years. Last year, Stephens finished runner-up to Elina Svitolina at the WTA Finals in Singapore in October and advanced to the final at the French Open before falling to Halep. In April, Keys won her first WTA clay-court title at the Volvo Car Open in Charleston after defeating former World No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki. Kenin began 2019 by winning her first WTA doubles title alongside 2014 Wimbledon finalist Eugenie Bouchard at the ASB Classic in Auckland, New Zealand, and earned her first WTA singles title at January’s Hobart International in Australia. Fed Cup newcomer Pegula had an impressive run at the Oracle Challenger Series in January before falling to Bianca Andreescu in the final.

Switzerland is captained by Heinz Guenthardt and features Viktorija Golubic, Timea Bacsinszky, Conny Perrin and Ylena In-Albon.
